Instant Pot Parippu Curry- Lentil Curry- Instant Pot Kerala Sadya Recipe

 

Kerala style Parippu or lentil curry made in the Instant Pot, this is one of the curries served in Sadya.

This Onam, I made all the dishes in the Instant Pot, sharing the recipe for making Parippu or Mung dal curry.

Ingredients
  • Moong or Mung dal- 1 cup, rinsed
  • Water- 2 cups
  • Salt- 1 tsp
For grinding
  • Coconut grated- 1 cup
  • Green chilies- 2 (or depending on your spice level)
  • Garlic, chopped- 2 cloves
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
  • Water- ½ cup
For Seasoning
  • Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  • Whole Red Dry Chili- 2
  • Small pearl onions, chopped- 4 (shallots- 1)
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Ghee- 2 tbsp
Instructions
  1. To the stainless steel pot, add moong dal with water and salt.
  2. No need to soak the mung dal in water, just rinse it under running water.
  3. Close the pot with the lid.
  4. Select pressure cook setting, Set time to 10 minutes at high pressure.
  5. After 10 minutes of cooking, do a quick pressure release.
  6. Open the lid, combine the cooked mung dal well.
  7. Grind the above-mentioned ingredients 'for grinding' in a blender to a smooth paste and keep aside.
  8. Add the ground mixture to the cooked mung dal and combine everything well.
  9. Add 1 cup water, combine well.
  10. Add ½ to 1 tsp salt based on your needs.
  11. Turn on Saute setting at medium temperature.
  12. Cook in saute setting for 5 to 8 minutes until the raw smell of the coconut goes away.
  13. Remove the pot from the main pot and keep it covered.
Cooking the Seasoning
  1. In a frying pan, heat ghe. As soon as the ghee turns hot, add mustard seeds. Let it splutter, add whole red chili, small onion and curry leaves.
  2. When the onion turns golden brown, remove the pan from the heat
  3. Add this seasoning over the Parippu/lentil curry and cover with the lid immediately for the aroma to get into the curry.
  4. Serve along with rice.
  5. First course in Sadya is rice, parippu and drizzle some ghee over it and enjoy.
