Parippu or Lentil Curry

Ingredients
  • Moong dal- 1 cup
  • Water- 2½ cups
  • Salt- 1 tsp
For grinding
  • Freshly Coconut grated or frozen- 1 cup
  • Green chilies- 2 (or depending upon your spice level)
  • Garlic, chopped- 2 cloves
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
For Seasoning
  • Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  • Whole Red Dry Chili- 2
  • Small pearl onions, minced- 4
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Ghee- 2 tbsp
Instructions
  1. In a pressure cooker, cook moong dal or toor dal with water and salt until 2 to 3 whistles.
  2. Grind the above-mentioned ingredients for grinding in a blender to a smooth paste and keep aside.
  3. When the dal has cooked, add the ground mixture, and combine everything well.
  4. Cook over medium flame for 5 minutes until the raw smell of the mixture goes away.
  5. Add ½ to 1 tsp salt.
  6. Adjust the constituency of the curry by adding 1 cup water, don't make it too watery.
  7. Remove the cooker from the heat, keep covered.
  8. In a frying pan, heat ghee, as soon as the ghee turns hot, add mustard seeds when it splutters add whole red dry chili, chopped small onion and curry leaves.
  9. When the onion turns golden brown, remove from the flame.
  10. Add this seasoning to the Parippu/lentil curry, keep covered.
