Apple Strudel

A delicious way to start your day…

Much awaited 2011 kicked off gracefully. So far it has been good for me. On the New year’s day I made this delicious breakfast with the hope that every day of this year will be sweet and delicious.

I don’t remember ever making a serious New year’s resolution. But this year, I did dare to make one which I feel is quite interesting. So, here is my New Year’s Resolution “to photograph my dinner every day for 365 days straight“. I’ve successfully completed my day 3. It’s not that easy as I thought yet I am up for this challenge. My goal is to eat healthy homemade food and to control my craving for dining out. However, this doesn’t mean that I am going to quit going to restaurants completely. I embrace good restaurant food, without them I wouldn’t have explored different cuisines and tastes.

Take a look at my new website Dinner365.com, where I’ll be posting one pic everyday. Do let me know your feedback.

Apple Strudel is a popular pastry in Austria and in many European countries. It is a sweet or savory layered pastry with a filling inside it. I made this using phyllo dough and used red delicious apples as the filling. You just have to spread the dough with the filling, roll it and pop it into the oven and in just 30 minutes you will be having a delicious breakfast.

Apple Strudel

Makes: 1 roll

Ingredients:

  • Phyllo Dough- 4 layers
  • Butter, melted- 4 tbsp
  • Beaten egg- 1

For Filling:

  • Brown sugar- 2 tbsp
  • Ground Cinnamon- 1 tsp
  • Raisins- 3 tbsp

Instruction

  • Combine diced apple, brown sugar, ground cinnamon and raisins together in a bowl and keep aside.

  • If you are using frozen phyllo dough, keep it on the counter top for few hours until it is ready to work with.
  • I used 4 sheets of phyllo dough, you could use more if you prefer.
  • Unwrap the phyllo dough on a wooden board.

  • Brush the top of each dough with melted butter.

  • Layer the dough on top of another until you have 4 layers.
  • On the top most layer, spread the apple filling evenly as a single layer.

  • Gently roll the dough starting from one end.
  • Place the roll filled with apples on a baking sheet.
  • Brush the roll with beaten egg.

  • Preheat the oven to 350F and bake the roll for half an hour or until golden brown.

  • Using a sharp knife cut the roll into slices and serve it on a plate.

Tips:

  • You could use any fruit of your choice.
  • To make it even more delicious you could top the apple strudel with dollops of ice cream or whipping cream.
  • Make sure to have this while it’s still warm.
